WHAT IS PET INSURANCE?

Whether furry, feathered or scaled, pets make up a huge part of our daily lives. Half the adult population in the UK own a pet, and everyone is part of a family.

But, like any family member, pets can become ill and it can be very expensive to get them the treatment they need. Animal Trust, a not-for-profit vets, estimates the price of an x-ray to be £289, some types of eye surgery to cost £789 and a total hip replacement to cost almost £5,000.

That’s where Pet Insurance comes in. Insuring your pet can be a cost-effective way of keeping them healthy, with cover starting from as little as £6.50 per month, and comes in four different tiers depending on what level of cover you require.

ACCIDENT ONLY

Covers costs of treatment when your pet is injured in an accident

TIME LIMITED

Fixed term policies to cover accident and illness over a period of time

PER CONDITION

Fixed amounts to treat specific conditions, also called ‘Maximum benefit’

LIFETIME COVER

Cover for your pet’s lifetime, claim limits can be per year or per condition

WHY DO I NEED PET INSURANCE?

We know pets are part of your family, so they deserve the same level of protection. You spend every day keeping them safe and happy, so you need to know they’ll still be taken care of if something goes wrong.

We also know that pets need more care as they get older, with one provider estimating the cost of looking after your pet’s health doubles every 4-5 years. Costs for some treatments can be very high – according to one provider care for a medium dog with gasto-enteritis costs more than £660 on average, whilst ongoing treatment for a cat with a tumour costs an average of more than £940 and foreign body removal in a tortoise could cost up to £2,400 according to another provider.

Around 95% of all pet insurance is for cats or dogs but many other types of animal can be covered such as rabbits, parrots and snakes with special ‘exotic animal’ policies also available.

WHAT FEATURES CAN PET INSURANCE POLICIES OFFER?

Insurers paid out more than £2m per day on ill and injured pets in 2018, but Pet Insurance can cover more than just ongoing & emergency care.

Many policies include alternative accommodation for your pet as an optional extra if you are unable to look after them through no fault of your own, plus should your pet cause harm to another animal, owner or property Pet Insurance can offer you liability cover.

Other additional features can include costs towards advertising for a missing pet, including providing reward money, and costs to cover funerals and burials if your pet sadly passes away.
